A rollator is a walker with four wheels, hand brakes and a built-in seat. For a lot of people it is the difference between staying home and getting out to the store, church or a grandkid’s game. But the right one depends on where you will use it and how you are built. Here is what we walk through with customers in our showrooms.
Rollator or walker?
A standard or front-wheeled walker gives you the most support, because you lift or slide it with each step. A rollator rolls freely, so it suits people who need help with balance and endurance more than weight bearing. If you lean heavily on your walker today, ask us before switching. The right choice is about safety first.
Get the Height Right
Stand up straight with your arms relaxed at your sides. The handles should line up with the crease of your wrist, so your elbows bend slightly when you hold them. Handles that are too low make you hunch over. Handles that are too high push your shoulders up. When you sit on the seat, your feet should rest flat on the floor.
Indoors, Outdoors or Both
- Mostly indoors: smaller wheels and a narrower frame turn easily in hallways, bathrooms and around furniture.
- Mostly outdoors: larger wheels roll better over sidewalks, gravel and the cracks every U.P. winter leaves behind.
- Both: a mid-size model is usually the best compromise. Measure your narrowest doorway before you shop.
Other Things to Check
- Weight capacity: every rollator has a rating. If you need a higher one, ask us about heavy-duty options.
- Folding and weight: if it rides in your car, make sure you or a family member can lift it into the trunk.
- Brakes: practice locking the brakes before you sit down, every time.
- Extras: a basket or pouch keeps your hands free for the handles.
Will insurance cover it?
Usually, yes. Most plans require a face-to-face visit with your doctor (not telemedicine) and a prescription that names the type of walker, along with your height and weight. Call us and we will tell you exactly what your plan needs.
